For manufacturers producing borosilicate lab glass, colored glass, opal ware and pharmaceutical glass — particularly in markets such as Bangladesh and parts of Ethiopia with subsidized industrial power or abundant hydropower — an all-electric furnace completely eliminates fuel price fluctuation risks and flue gas emissions. JEFFER electric glass furnaces utilize submerged molybdenum electrodes for direct Joule heating, achieving an overall thermal efficiency of 75-85%, compared to only 30-40% for fuel-fired furnaces.
Two configurations are available: pure all-electric design (3-20 TPD), and electric-boost design (20-60 TPD, auxiliary heating for small fuel-fired melters). This solution is optimal for projects requiring strict temperature control and low batch volatilization.
Raw batch materials are fed from the top into a refractory-lined melting tank. Submerged molybdenum electrodes pass alternating current through molten glass to generate heat directly via Joule heating. Without flame combustion, heat loss from superstructure and exhaust is significantly reduced. A cold-top batch layer covers the melt surface, providing thermal insulation and capturing volatile substances (boron, fluorine, alkali metals).
Molten glass flows through the throat into the working chamber, where electrodes maintain precise forming temperature. In electric-boost mode, a small fuel-fired system completes primary melting, while electrodes supply 40-80% of total energy input.
