When a glass plant's daily output exceeds 150 tonnes — whether for high-volume beverage bottles, pharmaceutical vials, or medium-scale float glass lines — the end-fired horse-shoe flame design reaches its tank-width limit. The cross-fired regenerative furnace solves this by arranging 3-6 pairs of burner ports on both side walls, distributing heat uniformly across tanks up to 12 meters wide.
It is the industry-standard choice for large container glass plants in India and Bangladesh, and for float glass lines across Southeast Asia. JEFFER delivered a 200 TPD cross-fired furnace in Indonesia, with a design that accommodates the power and fuel infrastructure typical of emerging markets.
The furnace tank is divided into melting and refining zones by a submerged throat. Batch charged at the feed end melts progressively as it flows toward the throat. During one firing cycle, left-side burners operate while combustion air is preheated in the left regenerator; exhaust flue gas flows through the right regenerator, transferring heat to its checkerwork.
The reversing valve switches direction every 20-30 minutes. This side-to-side alternating firing eliminates hot spots across the full tank width. Clarified, homogeneous molten glass passes through the throat into the working end, where temperature is uniformly conditioned to the viscosity required by downstream forming machines.
